RAM COMMITTEE

NOW L.A.M.P. COMMITTEE

The name of the MD-24 RAM Committee has been changed to MD-24 L.A.M.P. Committee.  L.A.M.P. (for Lions Assisted Medical Projects) encompasses all medical projects in which Lions Club members assist anywhere in the state.

Most Virginia Lions are familiar with the RAM (Remote Area Medical) expedition, conducted each summer, since 2000, in Wise County, Virginia.  This is an official RAM project, sponsored by Stan Brock, who founded and operates the Remote Area Medical expeditions.

Other medical projects in the state, in which Virginia Lions assist (such as Mission of Mercy), soon became “dubbed” RAM projects, even though they were not associated with the official RAM organization.  This was not only incorrect; it was an infringement on the registered trademark name of Remote Area Medical (AKA/RAM).  Therefore, the term Lions Assisted Medical Projects (L.A.M.P.) was adopted to indicate all medical projects in which Lions Club members are involved.  This will include continued participation in the annual Wise County RAM project.  In other words, when you go to the RAM project in Wise County, you are part of the L.A.M.P. team, which assists wit the RAM Expedition.

Donations to assist with Lions’ involvement in all medical projects are still needed.  However, clubs, club members, and other individuals may choose how their donations are to be spent.  Checks should be made payable to Lions of Virginia and mailed to the MD-24 Lions Office, 5004 Colonial Avenue, Roanoke,

Virginia 24018.  The “For” blank on the check should be completed in one of the following ways:  (1) If the donation should be restricted to providing assistance only to the Wise County RAM project, the word “RAM” should be entered in the

“For” blank.  (2) If the donation may be used to assist with any medical project in the state, the word “LAMP” should be entered in the “For” blank.  Separate accounting will be maintained for each of the categories.

Please help to spread this information to other Lions Club members in your district.  Thank you.

Yours in Lionism,

Geneva Belcher
